It's the major weight-bearing bone in your lower leg. Large running back types tend to put a lot of stress on the major weight-bearing bones in their legs...
Michigan's RB (Toussaint?) broke his tibia in November, also had surgery, and he hasn't been cleared to practice yet. He's also apparently "ahead of schedule."

I think we should red shirt him just to be safe. We have little to lose with redshirting him.
