Recruiting

-- South Carolina had several unofficial visitors over the weekend and the majority of them were commitments. There were a couple of intriguing uncommitted prospects and one is Bailey Meeks (Kannapolis, N.C./Home schooled). The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder plays his travel baseball with the South Charlotte Panthers. He’s a 2016 prospect who is viewed by some as a catcher but South Carolina is interested in him as a pitcher. The right-hander has been clocked at 85 mph on his fastball and is still developing on the mound. He’s a name to keep an eye on for the future.

-- Class of 2015 uncommitted outfielder T.J. Hopkins (Summerville/Summerville) made his second trip to Columbia in recent weeks to take in the games on Saturday. Hopkins is a player that South Carolina is going to see a couple of times during this high school season.

-- One of the players in town for the weekend was 2014 right-handed pitcher Tyler Johnson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal). He’s actually hit a little growth spurt and is standing close to 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds. He’s adding a little bit of velocity to his fastball and we’d expect he will sit right around 90 to 91. Johnson is starting to look the part physically.

-- Another committed visitor was 2015 right-handed pitcher Cody Morris (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), who made the trip for the weekend with his family. Morris is a potential top two round draft pick but he’s also a player who is going to put a high value on school and a college education. The early feeling is that the Gamecocks are going to have a very good shot to get him, although his draft is still 16 months away. Morris, who will keep his fastball in the 92 mph range already, has put on about 15 pounds since the summer and is up to around 205.

-- One uncommitted player we can tell you about is class of 2016 left-handed pitcher Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry), who is seeing his stock grow lately. Huggins was first noticed at a pitcher camp in January by pitching coach Jerry Meyers and he was immediately intrigued. The Gamecocks have been recruiting him hard ever since and had him down for a game the opening weekend against Bucknell. Huggins, who stands 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, also plans to visit this Friday for the Clemson game.

-- Class of 2015 left-handed pitcher commitment Logan Allen (Fletcher, N.C./IMG Academy) is off to a great start for his high school season at IMG Academy. Allen, who was recently ranked as the No. 116 player in the country by Perfect Game, threw five innings and struck out 15 of the 16 hitters he faced. The only ball put into play went for a bloop single and he was up to 90 mph on the radar gun. In a relief appearance late last week, he struck out four in two innings. The competition will increase though as he is scheduled to face Bishop Verot HS, a school in Fort Myers, Fla., that will compete later this year in the National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C. Allen has put on some good weight and is up to 6-foot-2, 200 pounds.

-- Class of 2014 right-handed pitcher signee Clarke Schmidt (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) pitched four innings in a Friday night scrimmage and struck out eight and walked just one. The two runs he gave up were unearned and he topped out at 92 mph on the radar gun. A scout source who was in attendance said he threw very well, especially early in the game.

-- Class of 2015 right-handed pitcher commitment Nick Neidert (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) is scheduled for an early season test on Monday night when his team faces Milton High School, last year’s state champion, with right-handed pitcher and Vanderbilt signee Dylan Cease on the mound. Cease is projected as a top 10 overall draft pick this June. We will have eyes on this game and will bring you the latest on Neidert soon.
