While I was growing up and since I've been on my own, I've had eight pets that I or my parents have had to put to sleep. Each experience was different, but all of them were painful. The only way I can handle it and go on is to remind myself that each one had a great life while with me, and that both of us were very lucky to have been in each other's lives. Pets become a part of our family, and it hurts to lose one, but it does get easier, and with time, you'll be able to remember the funny things and good times without it being so painful.
I'm really sorry about your little buddy, but remember, he won't have to suffer the pain of that disease, and you're doing the right thing, although, very often, the "right thing" to do is the painful thing to do. I do understand how you feel.

I remember walking home from my friend's house and my dad was loading the family dog into his truck to take to the vet to have it put to sleep. The parents tried to pull a fast one on me. The dog did need to be put down though.
