Well here's my theory:
If Oxford, which in many ways it did, grew up around the University and has became what it is today from its relation to the school ... then in turn ... if the University would have been founded where you mentioned then the surrounding area/town would very similarly grow up as well. Essential you would get Oxford in that area of the state and that would be awesome IMO.

I agree with you. That area is beautiful and the surrounding area has a similar feel as Oxford, especially with Corinth finally bringing liquor in. We spend about 20 weekends every year at J.P. Coleman, gorgeous in the fall.
