Phil Robertson spoke at a Sportsman's Banquet in Lancaster, SC last fall that I attended, and he said that he would rather shoot ducks than be chased around by "large, violent men." That's why he eventually quit football.

According to the internets duck season coincided with football season and he just didn't like that. Bet people told him he was stupid, guess that backfired on them.
