Can some Catholic explain why you need to "give up" something for lent, rather than "do good" for lent?

1: It isnt just catholics. Catholics are just the only ones who have a special day dedicated to the beginning of lent (Ash Wednesday). Many mainstream protestants (methodists, lutherans, etc.) participare.

2: It represents the 40 days Jesus wandered in the desert and was tempted by Satan, for those who believe in that.
