Merck, I'm so, so sorry. It's an awful thing to go through. A few years ago I was with my brother when he died. He had type 1 diabetes, and several years prior had had a kidney transplant, which left him with no immune system. Somehow he came into contact with staph, and by the time they figured out what was wrong, his brain had been oxygen-deprived too long. He was left in a persistent vegetative state. We had to decide whether to take him off life support and let him pass, or continue to treat the infection and let him recover to basically be Terry Schaivo. We decided to let him go. His wife was on the bed with him, my mom on one side, and I was on the other. I held his hand until he stopped breathing. It was horrible, but still very peaceful and I'm so glad I was there.
I lost my dad to a heart attack this past May. It was very sudden, and he was gone before anyone could get there. There was no goodbye for me. Friday morning, an aunt I was very close to passed away - and I will always regret not stopping by to visit her 2 weeks ago when I drove through St. Louis. I'll be going to her funeral on Tuesday.
You will always miss those you lose, but use this time to say goodbye, and "I love you" so that you have no regrets. And know that you will always have cherished memories that will make you smile and laugh, and remember them at their best.
God bless you and your family. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Most assuredly. It make take some time to pass, to forget what they're going through now, but it will pass, and only the good memories will remain.
