Would highly reccomend you go to a gun store and ask to test fire a few pistols before you decide. A .380/.38/9mm is most likely the caliber you want, anything smaller doesn't have the stopping power, anything larger could be tough to handle.
A revolver is going to have a 7-9 lbs trigger pull, most semi-automatics are going to be in the neighborhood of 4 lbs, but will have a safety.

Precision firearms in BR has a decent assortment of rentals.......... That's how I picked out my first gun.
