Buy a 22 auto. Then take safety and shooting classes. Teaches you what you need to know.
22 bullets are the cheapest ammo you can buy.
After you have passed the course then talk to your instructor about a 9mm or a 40 cal. Neither would be too large for a woman who knows how to shoot. My youngest girl can shoot a 1911 colt .45 about as we'll as I can. She weights 105/110. So anyone can do it if you burn enough powder.
Also if you want to sell a pistol you can get your money back.
