Long story short his grades were crap and no one on the LSU side thought he had a chance at qualifying, plus there was a legal issue (statutory rape iirc). LSU already had Michael Ford locked up who was considered to be the best back in the state that year. Bama somehow got Lacy in school, kudos to them.

Lacy was a huge gamble and LSU had backs they felt as good or better about.

Wasn't Ford in the same year as TRich? In other words the year before Lacy.
