considering the demographics and population, Jackson's food scene is fricking awesome imo.

I actually agree.

Jackson is a funny place. People that live there for the most part absolutely love it, but they continue to elect fricking idiots who, for decades, have run that damn city into the ground. That, and the white flight to Madison and Rankin counties hurt the city a lot.

That being said, there are still some redeeming cultural qualities to Jackson, not the least of which is Jackson's food scene. When I visit family and friends I always make a point to eat at a few places I can't live without.

This. Jackson does have a subculture that isn't traditionally Southern. You see it in bits and pieces, and some aspects of it remind me a lot of South Louisiana. The St. Paddys Day Parade has a certain Mardi Gras feel to it on a much smaller scale. The older architecture is certainly French Quarteresque. Most people don't realize that Jackson was actually one of the few staunch anti-war strongholds during the Civil War - that is until the North burned it to the ground.

And you're right, hardcore Jacksonians love their city and see the potential, but there is a crime problem, the city is a majority poorer African Americans and most of the middle class has fled to the suburbs. The leadership has lacked vision, and the leaders that do have vision don't have any power. The city council is an absolute joke.
