I think this is a very good question and deserves some thought. I think any time there is a huge level of 'personal' comfort btw coach and players, there is a chance that the average player doesn't hold himself to quite as high a standard knowing that the consequences of his actions will not be as severe.
On the flip side, it could be said that the 'father figure', non a-hole type coach brings out the real 'men' in his players, who then raise their own standards of excellence.
In the end, the latter method probably makes for better character, better men, but may not be as successful in the 3-4 yrs a kid has on the field in teaching him to mind details and develop the other habits that make for consistent performance.
