I remember USC and UCLA did it a few years ago and have to each give up a timeout or something like that. I don't recall all the specifics but they made a big thing about it and might have gotten the rule changed.

I remember the game you are referring to, but I think I had heard since then during a game that it just had to be contrasting colors. I think I was watching the Boise ST Va Tech game.
