This has to be the stupidest thing I've ever read on this board. Do you really want to live in a country without a free press?

"our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost." -- Thomas Jefferson

If the current state of journalism (Ron Morris, Fox News, TMZ, CNN twitter feeds, etc.) is the consequence of a free press... then I, for one, would be all for reigning in that freedom a bit. A press that spreads outright falsehoods as news is not doing its job to educate the nation of the actual events of the world. Hiding behind the intent of the first amendment to print/say whatever tickles your fancy, without fear of repercussion, is as bad as using the second amendment to defend your right to own an assault rifle.

The owner(s) of a media outlet decide what is news. If I owned a network, say like Ted Turner did, my views would be communicated. As with major media, a smaller outlet owner decides what he wants written/said.

If you want to influencde news, just buy you a television network. Simple as that.

So the press isn't free, it comes at the price of whatever a network like CNN costs.
