This is Slive's trump card IMO.
Make no mistake...this is a direct attempt to split the national title if/when one of our conference teams is wrongfully left out of the playoff.
We tried to be diplomatic with the "best 4 teams" proposal, and that clearly got us nowhere. Now, he's going to force the "top 4 overall" idea before "conference champs" is ever implemented, by setting up a scenario that is likely to expose the fatal flaw early on.

Bears repeating
IF the new 4-team model includes an "Alabama clause" to potentially keep a second highly-ranked SEC team out of the playoff, this move makes even more sense. It's the ultimate trump card. A #2 Bama team vs a (likely) highly ranked team from the Big12, in a game that Bama rolls, and in the event of an LSU loss, could EASILY split the national title.
He's leveraging his version of playoffs...either sooner or later!
