My interpretation of a sidewalk fan is someone who claims the team as their own, but knows absolutely nothing about them.
I have friends who are absolute die hard Razorback fans that graduated from UCA, etc. and they know every minute detail of the razorbacks.
I also have friends who graduated from the UofA that know not one damn thing about football, except that there is drinking before and after the game.
I would say that my friends that graduated from the UofA that know nothing about the sport are bigger "sidewalk fans" than my friends who attended a different school that live and breathe Razorback Red.

What about ND fans. I know a lot of people like them because they are Catholic but they've never set foot in the state of Indiana. But I can see liking a school for religious reasons. They feel a bond with that school.
