Origins of the SEC! SEC! SEC! chant

Haven't researched this but based on my recollections:
01. Watching/following CFB since 70 I do not recall this through 70's, 80's most of 90's (I would assume this prior to 1970 also). Not only did you pull for your team you also pulled for rivals to lose every game.
02. ESPN begins an informal 'Conference Cup' for CFB in late 90's. This 'mentality' begins to take root.
03. This chant goes national in 03 BCS CG (not 98 with UT when still in infancy)
04. Current BCS CG run has solidified this chant.
======================
Is this about right? Can anyone shed any light on this?

I never noticed it until recently but there was an SEC chant at the end of the 1998 national championship.

Didn't know that, I'm new to this blog. I'll see if I can figure out how to delete it.

First time I heard the chant was the 92 championship game between the canes and bama... I had really forgot until i rewatched it on dvd a few years ago and I could hear it in the background, it more than likely goes back farther than that without a doubt.. JMO

It started in 1932 when the SEC was formed and everyone else in the CFB world realized their shite was about to get ruined for the next century or so.

Arkansas fans used this cheer during their final year in SWC to taunt the SWC boys. I know because I was there.

I didn't realize this (I'll take your word for it). Another poster said this was heard when Hogs were leaving SWC. Perhaps it was the 92 expansion then, not the ESPN 'Conference Cup' deal then. Thanks.

The Florida players and fans chanted it after they beat FlState in the 96 Sugar Bowl. I also remember seeing a great interview after that year's SEC Championship game where a reporter asked a couple Florida players about them being the only one of the Florida Big Three not to have a championship (FlState & Miami had recently won theirs).
"None of them have ever won an SEC Championship", they answered.
They meant it and they believed it meant more to win the SEC than it did for team winning a MNC by running the table in an inferior conference.
I was proud of them for saying it and I remember wanting to go to a game and chant it after that.
I didn't get to do it until the 2001 Peach Bowl when LSU beat Georgia Tech. Have done it at every bowl game I've been to since then.

could have also been OBC hatred of Free shoe that showed through the players

Good answer, a feat more and more difficult to achieve I think.
