It may not be the most functional exercise, but it shows how strong you are at pressing movements. A strong bench = strong chest and strong triceps...which defenintely come in handy when you need to push someone away from you to create seperation.

Gray had 21 reps, but only a 32.5 vertical.

But bench press is very misleading in determining strength.
For one you are bressing against the bench so it doesnt factor in core strength which is much more important in football.
Secondly, players with shorter arms have an advantage in bench pressing. Show me a position in Football where having short arms is an advamtage.
