Don't think he's getting #75 this year. 76 maybe?
Jake Matthews won't be giving up his #75, but to wear Luke Joeckel's #76 would be trying to live up to some lofty standards.

That's some mighty big shoes to fill, but it would say a lot about the kid if he did.

UH OH... we might have another Ta Ta Thompson on our hands in Ishmael Wilson.

quote:

GigEmNation: What made you commit to Texas A&M? Ishmael Wilson: The system. I felt I could easily fit into the schemes and the things Coach [Kevin] Sumlin had going. The offense, the team, I liked the players he had, the way he was hands-on with the recruits. GEN: What has life been like since your commitment? Wilson: When I committed, that's when the hype calmed down. At first people thought it was just a gimmick to get other schools to look at me. But when people saw I was serious and saw me trying to recruit for A&M too, people realized "He's not playing." [Coaches] stopped coming to me because they knew I was going to be an Aggie.

GEN: Describe your first meeting with Kevin Sumlin. What was your first impression? Wilson: He appears so young, so I thought it'd be easy for him to relate and talk to us. I guess I was right, because he is [able to relate]. At practice, he plays the type of music we like to hear, and it gets us crunk. During two-a-days, stuff like that, it matters, because we're all young [players].

GEN: Do you have a favorite memory associated with Texas A&M yet? Wilson: I remember when we played Alabama. I had a classmate who's from Alabama and is a big Alabama fan. He was so excited. I told him, "We're going to beat y'all." He said, "We're at home, y'all aren't going to do nothing." To see what A&M did, in their home, it was ridiculous. When I got back to school, he didn't even come to school the next day. Another highlight for me was when Coach Sumlin was actually in my house, sitting in my living room [during an in-home visit]. When he pulled up and walked across the street to get to my house, people stopped to see if it was really him. That's when I knew, "Yeah, it's getting real."

GEN: Who has been the biggest influence on your success?
Wilson: My granddad and my parents. They used to always say how I was going to be so much. My granddad used to say, "Look how big you're getting, look what you're doing." It got to a point where [I missed certain things] because I had summer workouts. He would say, "I know, I understand." And sometimes he would get on my tail, when I'd come and visit him and say, "Aren't you supposed to be working out? This is not break time." He passed, so he's not going to see me do a lot of things, but he'll be with me in spirit. Stuff like that gets me out of bed at 5 in the morning to do two-a-days knowing that I have his spirit in me.

GEN: What's your favorite thing to do outside of football?
Wilson: You won't believe it, but I'm a lyricist. I like poetry. I do. I write poetry. While I was down in Houston for the Offense-Defense Bowl, me and Rashard [Robinson], who's going to LSU, we were rapping one time, with a camera, displaying our talents, because we had nothing to do. I do that a lot. In my spare time, I'm trying to learn how to make beats and produce songs, so I can become a musician, not just a lyricist. My brother is teaching me how to read music. It's just another talent I work on. I love music.
He also stated in the interview that he sees himself in the NFL 10 years from now.

I hope he can avoid the temptation of the lucrative slam poetry circuit. Fingers crossed.
