I know a man who was a very well known cardiolovascular surgeon, who had bouts with alcoholism and who was "recovered" when a nurse smelled alcohol on his breath in surgery. After a few legitimate years of sobriety, he still has physiological effects from his drinking days. When you are at the point of self medicating with whatever substance to that extent, I think it's all the same. Everyone reacts differently to different drugs. I think as long as whomever is able to perform at the level he needs to, I'm not worried about his past substance abuse.
