If you're healthy the Hilton Garden Inn Convention Center is an easy walk from the train station if you're not carrying a lot of luggage. I'd say about 10 city blocks. Walk down Julia Street to South Peters.
It's in the Warehouse District which is pretty safe. I recently lived in the Warehouse District for four years and walked everywhere by myself... never a lick of trouble. As with any city I wouldn't do it at night towing luggage, though.
