If bama thought saban was some football genius, why didn't they get him from Mich St. when they were playing merry-go-'round with coaches?

Because Bama didn't need a coach when LSU hired Saban. DuBose had just won an SEC championship that year and they were preseason top 5 going into the next season. When DuBose tanked out, Saban was not going to leave LSU that soon.

But saban was available in '97. bama could have gone after him then.

He wasn't ready or good enough then. You don't think he improved his coaching ability and resume' between 1997 and 2007 when Bama finally hired him?

DuBose was a highly successful defensive assistant for highly successful defenses for years under Stallings. Coupled with his Bama pedigree, and their insistence on hiring within the family, DuBose was probably more qualified for the Bama job than Saban was in 1997. Saban had only one seven-win season at MSU at that point. Then he continued to improve as a coach, and his resume' got better in the two years between '97 and '99, which made LSU want him.

Plus at that time LSU was nowhere near as good a job as Bama was, so being qualified to coach at LSU didn't necessarily make him qualified to coach at Bama.

It continues to amaze me that people don't even consider historical context when they post stuff like this.
