If bama thought saban was some football genius, why didn't they get him from Mich St. when they were playing merry-go-'round with coaches?

Because Bama didn't need a coach when LSU hired Saban. DuBose had just won an SEC championship that year and they were preseason top 5 going into the next season. When DuBose tanked out, Saban was not going to leave LSU that soon.
But saban was available in '97. bama could have gone after him then.
