Alabama has had an elephant on campus for Homecoming as recently as 2003. But someone is going to get hurt if that animal is in the stadium. Some guy was injured trying to get into the cage one was being kept at during a Homecoming weekend in the 80s. I could see this being magnified with a permanent mascot on the sidelines. However, I have always suggested that a habitat with two adult elephants (they are social creatures afterall) be constructed on campus, along with a full-time veterinary staff. Though I could see the outrage by PETA right now.

I think memphis nailed it. The window for having a live mascot is closed.
