It makes sense to us, but not to these entitled kids. It's just like when a pro athlete negotiates for an even bigger contact. They don't need the money. It's all about being respected as the best in their sport. Kids would see it that way. "If I'm good enough, you need to fork out to get me here. I'm way better than this guy. Why is he getting a free ride?" And if the kid is any good, that wouldn't be the best approach in trying to get him to your school.

Most walk ons have access to the same perks (training facilities and academic counseling) as the scholarship athletes. The coaches do have a little more control over the scholarship athletes as far as when they must report for practice before the semester starts, etc. since they basically sign a contract agreeing to certain terms and walk ons do not.
