Symbols are interpreted to be whatever people allow them to be. When I was a kid, I knew a lady who had been in a Nazi concentration camp during WWII. I once asked her, "why don't you get that tattoo removed?" She replied, "it helps me to sometimes remember who I am and gives me strength".
