I know he didn't win championships, but John Heisman had a major impact on the game. He was an early proponent of the forward pass. he also was one of, if not the first, to suggest a change from 2 halves to 4 quarters. He is also credited with developing or at least popularizing the center snap (as opposed to having the center kick or roll the ball back) and with using both guards to pull on an end run.
