It's a good question and I would say it's all our fault. The fact is that this is a popularity contest on a large scale. The winner is the school that gets the most 17 year old boys who are talented to "like" them. It's very odd when you think about it that way. There's obviously more involved like winning and getting to the league, but at its very core, it is nothing more than that. The fact that its a popularity contest is why emotions run so high IMO.
