"No Competetive Advantage" = bullshite

All you BAMA fans crying about "No Competetive Advantage" being gained in "textbook gate" are full of shite. There is no difference between allowing athletes to sell free textbooks and straight out handing them cash. Either action makes your university a more appealling destination than one which plays by the rules (AKA: where the athlete must get a job to earn money). If you illegally pay players, over the long term, you get better players. Hence, the competetive advantage.
With that said, I do agree that this is a minor infraction and loss of scholoarships would only potentially have been justified due to the "repeat offender window". I also believe this along with the Tim Floyd developments paves the way for a "slap on the rist for USC (which I do not feel is justified).

I'm pretty sure our recruiters weren't giving the recruits the ole, "Hey you can sell your textbooks for money" pitch. This is not a recruiting issue. It's a failure to monitor issue. Now go back to the Rant doofus.

How many times do we have to explain to you morons that they didn't sell the books, they just got them for friends. The NCAA investigated this part closely and found that no money was made on the situation, the books were simply loaned to friends.

Would a student on an academic full ride scholarship be able to sell their books back to the bookstore that gave them the books?
The answer is yes, and soon if not already, that will be the case for all scholarship students.
Bama is getting an insignificant punishment for a BS rule that is being changed. Yes, the rule was in place at the time, and Bama will pay its little price, but those athletes did the same thing that any academic scholarship student has been doing forever.
You can't discriminate like that and get away with it.

That's been the bama spin from the get go. They want to make it seem like it was just some extra books. I have only seen one reporter actually do his job and do some investigating on this matter. Someone wrote an article on al.com that outlined the total value of the books handed out by the bookstore to the kids on atheletic scolly and showed how during "book gate" the university bill for textbooks handed out to these kids went up about $100K from previous years. Even if the books are sold back at a 33% discount, it stands to reason that these 200 or so atheletes that were involved pocketed about $33K.
