I sometimes wonder did Bear lose that game to USC on purpose so that fans would accept black players. Strange how he wanted USC to come there so bad AND they lose so he could prove a point.

I don't think so. Bryant and McKay were good friends and had discussed playing for years. Keep in mind Alabama was coming off a very mediocre 6-5 '69 season with their defense giving up 49 and 47 pts in their last two games.

There has been a literary cottage industry about that 1970 game. Lots of 'fish tales' in that game.Nonetheless,it was a big deal and did open some eyes,even though Alabama had some blacks ready for the varsity in '71. Here is a pretty good book on the game:

bayou2003 I have heard people say that several times. I don't want to believe that he would throw a game, but it wouldn't shock me either . If he did, then he did it for a good reason.
