Since we learned Scott told Billy that - without an OC hire - 9-3 was the record required to keep his job, I think I am going to rewatch the A&M game towards the end and see Billy's reaction towards the end.

We were down only 1 score until 5 minutes left in the game. Still within our reach to get a score, a stop, and perhaps a FG.

Personally, I think that Stricklin let Billy coach one final home game before sending him off out of respect/pity. And wow....Billy almost lost that one had Lebby not been an idiot!

All he had to do was give up playcalling to a competent OC

He was fine as a figurehead / recruiter ect

Zero chance he would have fired if he went 8-4 without the really bad start.

You are probably right. If we were 4-2 right now with close road losses to Top-5 opponents, and THEN had two more losses, punctuated with some impressive wins, he might have survived. The USF loss took away all chance for error. He really needed at least 1 road win over Miami, TAMU, or LSU. This was supposed to be his big year. But every game has been a struggle or disappointment.

But I would contend that if Florida was as good as they should have been, who would they lose to besides UGA? Maybe Ole Miss? With the lack of production, UF would probably not win a shootout with Kiffin.

But man, 8-4 (maybe 9-4 after bowl season) seems like it would have barely saved his job. I felt getting into the CFP was the expectation in Year 4 and you really need to be 9-3 to get one of those slots.

S FL did us a favor looking at it now forcing Striklin to end this mess early. Now we need Oklahoma to beat Ole Miss.

Not sure if it was 3 losses, but the USF loss really shook things up, and probably forced everyone to re-calibrate.
