Seeing #1 Auburn and #2 Alabama play this weekend reminds me of this …

Taking nothing away from the two teams, but it’s just crazy and bizarre. UNC vs. Duke? Sure. Louisville vs. Kentucky? Totally. Indiana vs. Purdue? Completely feasible. But Alabama vs. Auburn in basketball? It’s just bizarre. Great for both teams, though. I’m jealous.

I thought so at the time and still think it’s an interesting bit of CFB trivia, that Mississippi State was the first ever #1 ranked team in the CFB playoff poll

The coolest part to me is that not only does the first #1 vs #2 matchup in SEC basketball history not involve either Kentucky, Arkansas, or Florida but it also involves two instate teams in arguably one of the Top 5 overall rivalries in college sports.

The volatility of college basketball rankings makes the odds of having a 1 vs 2 matchup well into the regular season so rare and why it's only happened three other times in the last 65 years.

Weird thing is that it's not totally out of the realm of possibility that there could be two more 1 vs 2 matchups involving SEC teams should Alabama somehow win Saturday. If Alabama wins Saturday and manages to win @ Mizzou, at home against Kentucky and Mississippi State, and then @ Tennessee and Florida wins their next 5 games then the Alabama/Florida game in Tuscaloosa will be a 1 vs 2 matchup. Same thing for Alabama @ Auburn the very next game if Alabama wins out and beats Florida and Auburn wins out after losing Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Those scenarios are highly unlikely IMHO but possible
