This edition was supposed to be better than last year.

Last year, he/his coaches/young men, really fricked up. Georgia would have wrecked Michigan. They (Michigan) know it (I know/talk with some of them).

Not with Bowers and McConckey plus a depleted rb room.

Coming into the season the consensus was that this might be Kirby's best roster and most talented team yet, so I'd probably have to disagree with you on that one. Every starter on offense has to be at least 21 and the D line is older guys too.

can you provide any links for that? I don't know a soul who thought that and I'm not using the benefit of hindsight either. Even back in August it would be impossible to claim that this year is as good as some of their prior counterparts at DL/LB/CB/TE/RB/OL. You could argue safety may be better than others but that's a stretch too.

ok but what does that have to do with anything?

How many NFL players did we graduate/leave for the draft last year?

idk offhand

Going back to VHS's wild statement, I think it's more likely you could argue thsi was actually our WORST roster heading into a season since 2020. I honestly can't comprehend people, and certainly not a consensus, saying it'd be our best.

DETROIT - Georgia football saw eight players drafted across the three days that the NFL Draft covered this past weekend. The program continued its streak of seven straight years with a first-round pick with tight end Brock Bowers and tackle Amarius Mims drafted on night one. The selection of Bowers continued a nation-leading sixth straight year that a Georgia tight end has been selected in the NFL Draft.

The Bulldogs finished tied for with two other schools for fourth most players drafted this year with eight.

Bowers was selected 13th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders, followed by Mims going 18th overall to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bowers was the first Georgia tight end selected in the first round since Ben Watson went 32nd overall to the New England Patriots in 2004. Mims became the fifth Georgie offensive lineman drafted in the first round in the Kirby Smart era, following up Broderick Jones (14th overall – Pittsburgh Steelers) last season.

On night two Georgia saw four more players selected, with three of the four players coming from the defensive backfield.

Junior wide receiver Ladd McConkey was selected by the L.A. Chargers as the 34th overall pick (second pick of the second round), marking the top Georgia receiver taken since A.J. Green in 2011 (fourth overall pick, Cincinnati Bengals). Next up was junior defensive back Kamari Lassiter, who went 42nd overall to the Houston Texans as the first Georgia defender to be selected, marking the Texans' first Bulldog selected since 2012. Lassiter's backfield teammate, junior Javon Bullard, went to the Green Bay Packers with the 58th pick later in the second round.

Senior defensive back Tykee Smith was next off the board for the Bulldogs as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Smith 89th overall in the third round.

With the three defensive backs being selected on Friday night, Georgia has now had multiple defensive backs drafted in four consecutive drafts.
Two more former Bulldogs were selected on the third and final day of the NFL Draft beginning with junior center Sedrick Van Pran, who was selected by the Buffalo Bills as the 141st overall pick (sixth pick of the fifth round). In the following round, senior defensive lineman Zion Logue was selected by the Atlanta Falcons as the 197th overall pick (21st pick of the sixth round).

I have been on Dawg message boards since 2006, and I have seen some doozies. You are probably the biggest know-it-all that I've encountered yet. You just come across as bizarre and a strange dude!

Also, on another note, we could tie or set the NFL draft record this April and break our own record of 15 players selected.

cool. any progress on providing any proof of this yet?

I don't believe one single person would have made that claim heading into the season, especially considering the rosters we fielded just a few short years ago in 21/22.

The current team is a very talented roster. The team, however had to replace 8 NFL players who started last year. The team also has had some of these key players hurt or dismissed. Everett sucks according to the Braintrust as well as Beck, so they can’t use them as proof sources in this matter.

sure, we'll always have a talented roster under kirby. But this roster isn't in the same ballpark talent-wise as 21/22. The only thing I can possibly fathom as it relates to VHS's claim is that Beck was getting some brief hype as a potential #1 draft pick, or at least the #1 ranked QB on the board, so people just kinda took that and ran with it. We are inferior at almost every single position compared to 21/22. And that's by no means a knock on this team or roster, it's more so a testament to how absolutely insanely blessed we were in those other years.

"Same ballpark" is just delusional and way out in left field. For our '22 draft class, there are two starters and maybe 3 second teamers in the NFL on here. The 2022 team had the most heart and best leadership, but I'm not sure why you're convinced that they were the frigging '85 Bears smh.

WG is one of the most legit OG members on this site. You gain inspiration from him that you will not get anywhere else, and for that, I'm grateful.

I was a bitter fool going through a nasty divorce and honestly made an arse of myself in here before my 7-year ban that just ended.

Seriously having to lurk forever made me rethink how I interact with fellow fans and those who graduated from UGA and for the reasons we all work on this site.

You seem to bring good info, but the room is going to blacklist you for crap post cheapshots...

i still can't get over this so let's just look at it more thoroughly. We'll gloss over the "consensus" part since that's just absurd and there isn't any evidence to support it. Moving on from that though let's look at each starter position to compare. I mentioned earlier that there are very few positions that 2024 would have a superior starter to their 2021 counterpart so let's compare them all. Keep in mind, for the 2021 people we're using everything we know about their entire college career while for the 2024 folks we're going with what was known coming INTO the season, so nothing done this year yet counts for the sake of this discussion.

QB- Stetson vs Beck
Beck was getting heisman hype in preseason so if someone wanted to say this roster spot is better than 21 I wouldn't necessarily argue too hard. We'll be generous and say 2024

RB- Zamir/Cook/Kenny Mc/Milton vs Etienne/Brob/RRob/freshmen
Clear edge to 2021 IMO

TE- Bowers vs
Not even worth discussing. 2021.

WR- AD Mitchell/Pickens/Ladd/Kearis/Jermain Burton/Arian/Marcus Rosemy vs Dom Lovett/Rara/Colbie Young/Dillon Bell/Arian/Humphries
2021

LT- Jamaree Salyer vs Earnest Greene
2021

LG- Justin Shaffer vs Dylan Fairchild
2024

C- Sedrick Van Pran vs Jared Wilson
2021

RG- Warren Erickson vs Tate Ratledge
2024

RT- Warren Mcclendon vs Truss
2021

DL- Travon/JDavis/Wyatt/Carter vs Stackhouse/Miller/TID/Brinson
2021

ILB- Quay/Tindall/Nakobe vs CJ Allen/Raylen Wilson/Mondon
2021

OLB/Edge- Adam Anderson/Nolan Smith/Beal vs Mykell/Chambliss/JWalker
2021

Star - Brini/Bullard vs Aguero/Jacorey Thomas
Bullard hadn't really come on yet so I wouldn't argue going with 2024 here

CB- Derion Kendrick and Kelee Ringo vs Daylen Everette and Julian Humphrey
2021

S- Chris Smith/Lewis Cine vs Malaki Starks/Dan Jackson
Malaki is the best of the bunch but overall I'd take 2021. Again we can be generous and give the nod to 2024 because of Malaki though

So looking at our starting roster we have 10 cases of 2021 being better and 4 for the current roster. And some of those 4 were tossups.

I again just don't see any way possible to claim this 2024 is the "best roster" that kirby has had. In fact you could make arguments that other versions like 17/18 could have a case to be better as well.

Excellent comparison post.
I pretty much agree with your assessment but the QB position is debatable.
Beck is definitely the better passer and has the stronger arm and height advantage but having a dual-threat QB in Bennett is one of the reasons we won 2 NCs with Stetson at the helm.
I would rather have Bennett with the ability to run zone reads and run/pass option plays to be honest.

I would too. But for discussion's sake I can easily see why someone in August of 2024 might give the nod to Beck...I think he was getting a few mentions as a potential overall #1 pick. Or at least the #1 QB. And was one of the frontrunners (if not the frontrunner) for heisman.
