I have always felt bad for Ford. He didn't want the job of President, and was quite happy in Congress. To make matters worse he was handed a lousy hand to play. He had to deal with the collapse in South Vietnam, very uncertain economic times, and... oh yeah... the guy he stepped in for was the first US President to resign rather than face impeachment. Ford actually managed to stabilize things, which is damn impressive, but he had to spend the Primaries clubbing Reagan down like a baby harp seal and didn't have time to pivot towards defending himself from Carter.
