So what happened to them? They were in front of us in a bunch of offseason stuff but are barely top 25 now?

They are expected to have a solid Oline with 3 returning Oline. They also look to have a serviceable QB in a coastal Carolina transfer. The running game was non standard to non existent with an WR and QB carrying the load. That same WR was the only receiving threat of note.

The D last year was outstanding. Top 25 against the run, and top 30 in total D. But on 3rd down was where they shined the most at 3rd in the country. That’s a big lead up for me to state those guys are gone. They replace a top LB, the Dline and much of the secondary. They will still be good but they shouldn’t be great early.

The Vols are a slight favorite on a neutral site in early betting. Personally I wouldn’t touch this one. It’s a toss up game that should favor the Vols. On paper it shouldn’t be close but it feels like 2022 Pitt to me.

The next to the last sentence in the third paragraph is the highlighter.

McCall really hasn't faced a top-notch defense. So he will be tested.

I know they added that kid that UConn had in that blowout we decided to pass on in favor of Staes.

Their new QB is supposed to be very accurate but not have an arm.

That's like saying a pitcher can throw strikes but doesn't have the arm strength.

I was at the Georgia Dome in 2012, the last time we played NC State. It was the last game that one of my older brothers and I attended together. He has since passed on.

That was the introduction of Cordarrelle Patterson.

From NCState DC
“When I looked out, we first broke our huddle to run on the field, we had eight new starters.”
"The speed of this game that we're about to go to, we've not seen anything like it, preseason, fall camp, as far as the tempo that they use. That's our biggest adjustment right now. What we're looking for is we have to play very, very fundamentally sound. We have to communicate. I can't say that word enough. If we don't, it will be ugly!”

This scouting report indicates NCST will may to keep pressure on the pocket, and disrupt Nico.

quote:

3) Pressure the quarterback

Iamaleava dropped back to pass 61 times last season and spent 21 of those plays under pressure. When a defense collapsed the pocket, the freshman completed 2 of 8 passes for 42 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt. He took 7 sacks in 2023. Opponents blitzed him on 29.5 percent of his dropbacks and held the talented quarterback to 3 completions on 12 attempts.

Chattanooga did not even try that strategy against Iamaleava last week, sending extra defenders on 6 dropbacks. In a clean pocket, he picked the FCS program apart for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns. He faced pressure on 4 dropbacks and completed 1 of 2 passing attempts for 11 yards. In his limited time on the field, his performance against the blitz is really the only area where he has struggled.

NC State can help its chances Saturday if the defensive line plays up to its billing and disrupts the standout freshman in the pocket.
