West Central Alabama has an interesting history. The Free State of Winston (neighboring county to Walker) was an area made up of the whole or parts of Winston, Blount and Cullman counties that supported the Union in the Civil War. They very neatly seceded from Alabama. The CSA arrested many citizens and several county leaders and representatives spent the war in prison.
I have done business in Walker County and this part of the state for years and it really is different from other areas. It’s a vibe that’s hard to describe. I’ve never felt unsafe, but then again I’m not involved in meth and fentanyl dealing and I’m usually in and out of client accounts and on my way before the sun goes down.

There was a sign on a road entering Walker co which read “Don’t let the Sun go down on your black arse in Walker county .”
I didn’t believe it but then during the mid 70s I worked with a guy from Walker co and he assured me it was true.
