My uncle was a sports writer in the late 40s and 50s. He was friends with Ty Cobb , who called him when he found out my uncle was in a terminal situation. He would tell me stories about the sports figures he would party with. I asked him if he had ever considered writing a book about all these adventures".

He said no, his job was to write about sports and he would never cross that line .

Good for your uncle. Not many old-school journalists left.

These days, they value their worth by hits. Any made up crap can work, as long as it gets hits.

Like I said, for the close to a quarter century I spent in sports, my deal was covering games. I could do it but I really didn’t care for writing columns, going to pre-game press conferences or writing pre-game stories, or doing personality pieces. I lived for being at the actual ball games and reporting what happened.
