He one hundred percent hit his head while falling. He did that thing where you have something in your hands and instead of bracing for a fall you try to protect what's in your hands then fell and hit his head.

As for the blood everywhere, he almost certainly wandered around in a daze. Head injuries are wild, he could have been completely unaware of what he was doing wandering around on auto pilot bleeding everywhere.
