I'll dredge this up for one last comment.

When watching SEC games, I stream the radio broadcast as I watch on TV. The difference in the quality of the play-by-play is evident. Radio assumes you can't see what's happening and, thus, tries to "paint a picture" of what's going on

That being said, I always enjoyed the play-by-play of Eli Gold on the Bama broadcasts. Unfortunately, I didn't listen often enough to notice any change in the quality as the years have passed.

Initially, I was more than a little miffed at some of the comments from Bama fans not supporting Gold. As I read more, it was evident that Gold's abilities were in decline and that, yes, maybe it was time to move on.

I was reminded of the later years of Larry Munson at Georgia. I'm no UGA fan, but listened to him because of his unique style. He was doing Bulldog and Falcons play by play later in his career. And towards the end, the decline was very noticeable to the point of being a distraction. I listen to Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs call my Gamecocks' games. Todd Ellis is great but it's obvious that time is taking its toll on Tommy. He's more of a grandfatherly side kick than a color analyst.

Bottom line is that age catches up with us all. Was it time for Eli Gold to be replaced? I don't know. But, I'd hate to see him hang around and become a caricature of his former self like Lee Corso has on College GameDay.
