He will be much like Joey Halzle at Tennessee or Charlie Weiss at Ole Miss - an OC who works under a head coach who created/runs a system and is therefore responsible for much less than an OC at most other places would be. He was obviously not ready to be what was basically the offensive head coach at Indiana. He won't have the same responsibility here, but his in game play calls and flow will definitely matter. Whether he's able to do that, with DeBoer's assistance in gameplanning, is TBD.

Grubb was respected as a really good play caller, so losing him is a real loss. DeBoer trusted him and there was a big comfort factor there.

quote:

I don't get it. It would seem most OCs out there would jump at an opportunity to get a shot like this and he hires an old friend who was a complete bust as OC at Indiana for ONE year. Maybe he thinks he's the second coming of Saban and can rehabilitate a coach's career, but let's be real, he's no Saban and there will never be another one like him.

This doesn't really make sense, because DeBoer is going to run and teach DeBoer's offense. He's not going to hire a guy who runs a different offense.

Joe Sloan, LSU's newest play caller, had some pretty bad offenses at Louisiana Tech - #108 in 2020 and #103 in 2021 per FEI. By all accounts he's a good offensive coach and will be fine at LSU, but pretty similar situation.
