What you're talking about isn't "accepting mediocrity." What you're talking about involves making a mind palace to live in instead of reality with historical context.

Next year’s team is too talented to finish 8-4. That would not be an acceptable results. The realistic expectation for next year’s team is to make the playoff. Anything more is gravy, anything less is a failure.
