QB Rating:

Milroe-111.9
Penix- 93.6

And Milroe had worse recievers, Less Protection, and had to deal with a bad snap almost every play.

I’ll definitely give you the WR thing, but dude was getting killed out there. Sadly some friendly fire too.

My critique of Milroe has nothing to do with his stats, rating, w-l record, etc. these things are not reliable when assessing QB ability. For example the rating system rewards you if you hold a ball vs attempting a pass and it falls incomplete. Nor does it ding you when you missed open receivers, etc.

Many QBs can win 10+ games a season because we have the most talent 95% of the time. It’s the other 5% when it really matters. We know this is true because Saban has had many QBs of various skills, speed, size, shape, IQ, etc. but not all of them were capable of winning a NC.

So forget the stats, w-l records, ratings and ask yourself what are the differences in these QBs. What are the common characteristics of the NC winning QB’s.

All the QBs that won national championships at Bama have this in common: high football IQ, pocket presence, pocket awareness, ability to call audibles to avoid pressures, ability to call protections to pick up blitz schemes, ability to make quick decisions post snap, ability to take with a defense is giving.

Milroe as of 1/8/24 can do none of these things and yet just like with QBs before him, the team is still capable of 10+ win seasons. But will not win a NC unless we have a QB that can do the above. That’s not my opinion. Those are the facts of what has transpired under Saban.
I hope something clicks for Milroe and he can become that QB and wins a NC. It takes years to develop these skills generally beginning in Junior high. Milroe will need to hire a QB guru (like Tua and others have) to work with him immediately if he has any shot at improving in such a short time. He will be the starter next year so I guess we will see how serious he takes his development in the off season.

When discussing, not only the Michigan game but the entire season long offense. This never, ever, ever, ever needs to be forgotten.

Seth Mclaughlin and his play colored every single aspect of that offense. We really don't know how good Jalen Milroe actually is. We know he's not elite but what we don't know is how much better he can actually be.
