If that's true then surely his predecessor or successor performed better.

You don't think any coaches before Brian Kelly did better at ND?

Lou Holz
Ara Parseghian
Knute Rockne
Frank Leahy

All came before Brian Kelly. Holz's last season was only a few years before Kelly came on the scene.

Just a thumbnail sketch of Holz:It can be argued that Holtz coached the golden era of Notre Dame football. In his third season, he led the program to a perfect 11-0 record and the Fiesta Bowl where they won the national championship against West Virginia. Holtz was named the 1988 coach of the year. All in all, Holtz finished his Notre Dame career with a .765 winning percentage, led the team to nine major bowl games in 11 seasons, went 32-20-2 against ranked teams, and in five of the 11 seasons he coached, Notre Dame finished in the top six in the AP poll. He sent 74 players to the NFL and coached 10 All-Americans.

I would say that beat Kelly. Has Kelly won a major bowl game? What is his record against ranked teams? How many times has Kelly finished in the top 6?

Holz was better. I mean, yeah. I get it that they did not have any success in between Holz and Kelly, but that was mainly because they made poor hiring choices. None of the coaches were successful after leaving ND and none were successful at a major university before ND.

As for his successor? Seriously? Ok. He has gone 9-4 and 9-3. Kelly has gone 10-3 and 10-4. Looks pretty even to me.

I mean if you leave out the fact that Kelly took over a .500 team and Freeman took over a playoff contender, then yeah, they're pretty even.
