An undefeated Auburn SEC Champ missed out back in the BCS days.
Some programs are given the benefit of the doubt for more than others. Some programs are allowed extra chances, mulligans, and excuses. Others aren’t offered any margin for error.
This is why the subjective system for awarding championships in cfb has always been so asinine. A system needs to be devised to decide these things on the field, where EVERY team in FBS has a pathway to the playoffs.
Remember, this year there are TWO undefeated teams that won their conference which are not in the playoffs. Now, we all assume that neither of these teams could beat Alabama based on their strength of schedule, which may be true. But, wouldn’t you rather find out for sure by playing that game? I mean, it’s not like in the NFL teams with the best record always dominate. In fact, there have been many times when teams with less than stellar records went on an absolute tear in the playoffs and beat multitudes of significantly “better” teams. I know CFB doesn’t have the same relative parity, but you can’t tell me with a straight face that FSU on a neutral field has “no chance” against any of these playoff teams.
I think every conference champion should have a place in the playoffs, no conference should have a situation where teams are left out of the conference championship game because of subjective measures, and if some conferences are so lousy that they could never compete, then those conferences shouldn’t be in the same league, and we should relegate them to a league where they actually could compete for a title.
