I only played at the high school level so that’s my level of expertise lol. However, our coach forced 3 of us to be shooters. Everyday, all day, shooting. We became deadly. Fast pace, 3 point game. The only time we struggled was when we had a hard defensive game from shots not falling. Bama was just about at the end of the tank when we won the other night. That’s the risk of this system, the steam will run out if the shots don’t fall on top of having to play hard defense on a strong inside team.

"Bama was just about at the end of the tank when we won the other night."
You're spot on. Our slump towards the end of the season that several attributed to "lack of effort" was what the NBA folks refer to as a rookie "hitting the wall." Oats acknowledged it without using the exact terminology. The break before the SECT and the first game loss gave the team time to get their legs back. So they were able to play with much more energy. But the poor shooting on wide open shots and misses at the rim against GCU IMO were indications that they were, as you said, at the end of the tank.
The critical question at this point is whether Oats recognized it and actually allows them to recover sufficiently or burns out what little they had left. Who gets the 50/50 balls, if we are a half step slow on D and commit fouls, outside shooting on open shots, etc. against UNC will be a good indication of whether he has actually learned the lesson.

The strategy Oats uses needs a deeper bench for sure but we lost so much from last year it’s prolly our best bet to just keep the peddle to the metal and hope for the best. Hard to just change philosophies at this point. We are what we are and I’ve enjoyed it.

From Hey Coach last night:
“We’ll do our best over these next four days to get the guys’ legs back under them. We’re not gonna practice [Tuesday]. We’re gonna try to get their confidence back with their shooting. We’re trying to get the No. 1 offense in the country back while maintaining — I saw somewhere we had the 38th-best defense in the last week. If we didn’t take our foot off the gas against Charleston like we did when we got up 31, I think it would be closer to top 20.
“So if you could combine a top-20 defense and the No. 1 offense, you’ve got a chance to make a Final Four run.”
Sounds like he gets it.
