Gus' "system" was trapping D personnel on the field and exploiting it. He was outstanding at it. When the NCAA changed the sub rules, he wasn't able to adjust.

the sub rules changed way, way before gus. I distinctly rmember when Richt first got here in 2001 he brought his HUNH from FSU and after we beat tennessee fulmer complaind so much about the D not having time to sub that rules were changed.

Maybe more severe changes happened in the 2013ish era that you're mentioning, but I still don't think that alone was the cause for his fall off. It sounds so simple to say but an offense based heavily around an RPO wiht a QB that is mobile as hell and can also throw really gave people fits in that era. It wasn't overly complicated but he ran it to near perfection. But then who ran it after Marshall? Jeremy JOhnson, sean white, stidham, nix.

JJ and white were garbage. Stidham could throw but wasn't a running threat. Nix was a good combo of both and was alright and they got alright results.

I dont' think it's nearly as complicated as it may seem; his talent dropped off at the most important position for his system and he suffered.

Bama fans are scared of Freeze ! Freeze already flipped a 5 star WR from Bama and more to follow. Freeze about to kick some Saban arse as he has done it before . Saban will retire after this year .. he already bought his retirement home.
