Nike does not own the interlocking MSU, they simply administered the trademark. That was a message board rumor that became prevalent for years. After Mississippi State dropped Nike and went to Russell for the Croom error, both Midwestern State (Texas) and Montana State used the interlocking MSU, as Nike administered the trademark and let it drop. Something about how it appears off center on apparel is why it is not liked by the MSU athletic department. The old M-S-J logo did not have this problem, but the 1996-2003 modernization did. In 1995, Richard Williams saw a Marshall Track and Field logo and had a basketball only logo created - it became the M-State. The early version was so bad that it was skewed on the floor at the Hump, but was "squared up" in 2000. In 2004 it became the primary logo for Mississippi State. In 2009, Mississippi State went full Adidas (Basketball had been Adidas since 2002). With it, came a new logo set - the new M-State along with Bully humping an M, a cowbell, and what you see now.
I believe the Adidas deal is up next summer. Be curious to see if State sticks with them or tries to make a change.

Selmon is a big Nike guy. I suspect we will make a move to Nike in 2025 and have another all-new look.
