Other polls were more highly thought of back then,

There were only 2 polls back then, and no one would say the Helms Athletic Foundation (who voted Wisconsin #1 anyhow) was above the AP.

I do tend to mispeak sometimes. There were others that named National Champions that did not strictly meet the criteria for a poll in 1942. The AP was still not the powerhouse it is today, or anywhere close. They also named a champion before the bowl season.

We did claim 1942 retroactively, also, which I know some people don't like, but it's not like we were not good or lost a bunch of games or didn't play in a bowl game or something.
I do know that some of the services picked Georgia and then Georgia was picked by some services retroactively...which I have no problem with because sometimes you can see things a bit more clearly and less biased looking back. No offense to LSU fans but they claimed they had the best football team of all time in 2019 and was calling this baseeball team the GOAT along with their WBB team. In other words, a little distances tends to take some of the bias and hyperbole out of it.
