Why 50 years? The AP was around in 1936.

The AP was not the powerful poll that it is today, or even 50 years ago. It took them awhile to to gain the status it enjoys today. Other polls were more highly thought of back then, and they even named their champions before bowl season.

I will only defend 1942 because I am not as familiar with the other teams listed. But Georgia beat #3 Alabama and #2 GT then won their bowl game. Auburn did beat us, but National Champions lose one game more often than not.

There were only 2 polls back then, and no one would say the Helms Athletic Foundation (who voted Wisconsin #1 anyhow) was above the AP.
