Never realized how dangerous parachuting in the military is.

Damn!
Dumb question, but in the 15 seconds after, "Hey, you're about to smack a truck," couldn't someone have jumped in that Humvee and threw it in reverse?

It's like they were waiting for a good laugh at that guy's expense.

I'm guessing Wolfie has probably experienced this IRL and could give us some insight.

He's retired and doesn't wake up till noon.

You can make adjustments, but only minor ones. "slip" is them telling him to do exactly that, but he can't even see the truck.
This kind of parachute is used for mass drops. You don't want even 64 dudes from the same plane to be steering all over the place and running into each other, let alone a battalion or brigade sized drop.

Aren't these guys taught to look around at their landing zone?
Dude hit the truck and bounced off like he was standing in a crosswalk and got run over.

(only one into a tree though)

Slip means to pull one side of the parachute as hard as you can to get the chute to slide/turn a bit.
He couldn't see the truck because it was behind him. Wearing all the gear, you can't turn your head normally. If he was jumping with nothing but a t-shirt, he still wouldn't have been able to see it.

1 - Proper exit, check body position, and count.
2 - Check canopy and gain canopy control.
3 - Keep a sharp lookout at all times and constantly compare your rate of descent. During your descent obey the three rules of the air a) Always look before you slip b) Always slip in the opposite direction to avoid collision and c) The lower jumper always has the right of way.
4 - Prepare to land.
5 - Land.
Jumper failed to slip away from an obstacle on the ground. If I was offering an opinion, he was trying to land near a parachute turn in point. Ended up landing on the vehicles for the drop zone safety officer (DZSO). Lucky he was not badly hurt.
ETA: He was jumping a T-11 (a type of military parachute) CE (combat equipment) which he had already lowered. If he saw the obstacle (which he should have), then he should have pulled a hard, one riser/diagonal slip to avoid it.
Clearly he did not.

Is this a lot, or a little, compared to the norm?

quote:It is (relatively speaking) a lot. You are "required" to jump every three months while on airborne status. You will (based on unit training requirements) jump more often than that. I was jumping (on average) 24 times per year for a couple of years

This is referred to as "chasing" jumps.
But it was worth it.
Before I terminated status in 2009 I was able to earn my master parachutist badge.
